As you may know, I was out of commission and off line for five weeks in February and March.
I only thought this week to check my Spam folder (which is good at catching spam, but also a fair number of legitimate messages).
¶ Here’s a Mayoral message from March 31st that is not political or partisan, nor is it seeking support for one side of a contested issue.
PVD Fest, as Mayor Elorza explained to neighborhood leaders earlier this month, will spread out more from downtown this year into those neighborhoods.
It is in some ways the successor to earlier summer celebrations such as the Rhythm’n’Roots Festival.
Now if only someone could organize an affordable, inclusive successor to First Night and Bright Night (Dec. 31/Jan. 1) that is more than a ball in the Convention Center.
Best wishes,
Dave

| It’s Official, PVDFest is returning for a Third Year! This week, I proudly joined staff from the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism, representatives from founding partner FirstWorks, and various community partners to announce that Providence’s signature art festival will return for its third edition June 1- 4, 2017. During the four-day event, artists and performers from around the globe and just around the corner will descend upon Providence for a multicultural and multidimensional celebration of artistic expression. This year’s celebration promises to be bigger and better with new attractions and creative minds leading the festivities. Just as last year, the activities will culminate in a large-scale celebration of creative expression on Saturday, June 3! To find out more about the off the wall programming please visit PVDFest.com. Highlights for 2017 include:
- BANDALOOP, international vertical dance pioneers and festival headliners
- Moon Market, a collaborative retail party featuring over 30 Rhode Island based movers, shakers, and makers
- Maker Faire, a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness presented in collaboration with AS220 and our Department of Art, Culture + Tourism.
- Global Food Village, hosted by the Providence Cultural Equity Initiative (PCEI)
- Finale programming at the Dexter Street Training Grounds celebrating the historic Cranston Street Armory and the surrounding neighborhood
- Public tours of the Woonasquatucket River Corridor to learn more about Providence’s emerging innovation district
Reminder: Applications for Summer Fellowships are Due Next Week As a reminder, applications for our Mayoral Fellowship Program are due next Wednesday, April 5, 2017.
