On the weekend of May 5 to 7 there will be a number of walks lead through
Providence in honor of jane jacobs, who was a legendary urbanist fighting
for keeping cities cities.
Below I copy the publicity and I encourage you to check out a walk. Right
in your own neighborhood Fran Leazes of RIC and the Freinds of the North
Burial Ground will lead a walk through the north Burial Ground on Saturday
May 6 at 10:30 AM meeting just inside the walk in gate at the steps across
from the armory.
At 9 AM on Saturday May 6 I will be leading a walk along the lower
Moshassuck River/Canal St. This is where the city began. With the original
spring preserved in the National Historic Park. I will describe the
original landscape and why it was such an enviable location from 1636 until
1920. Walk will begin on the bridge over the river where Charles St becomes
Canal St at the head of tide. We ahall walk south along the river, petering
out somewhere along South Water St after the Moshassuck and the
Woonasquatucket merge to form the Great Salt (Providence ) River.

Thirteen Citizen-Led Neighborhood Tours Planned in Providence
During the Jane¹s Walk Global Weekend Festival: May 5-7
Providence, RI (April 18, 2017) Get to know some of Providence¹s hidden
treasures during Jane¹s Walk, a global festival on the first weekend in May!
Inspired by urban activist Jane Jacobs, Jane¹s Walk promotes urban literacy
by encouraging people to get out and explore their neighborhoods. Unlike
typical guided tours, these free walks are led by volunteer citizen guides
who share knowledge of their own communities while inspiring participants to
think, talk, and connect. Providence is now one of 209 participating cities
in 41 countries across 6 continents, and we expect that number to grow!
Since 2014, hundreds of people have participated in 26 walks that have been
organized in Providence. The following walks are currently scheduled for the
