ENA Newsletter – January 2018
Prepared by Karen Hlynsky, Chair, Elmwood Neighborhood Association
Good-bye 2017! Welcome 2018!
2018 comesin with a blast – a blast of arctic cold weather. Take precautions as lowtemperatures continue into the coming week. Prolonged exposure to extreme coldweather can cause hypothermia and frostbite. If you have elderly neighbors, check on them to make sure they are keeping warm. Find cold weather tips at http://www.providenceri.gov/providence-residents-urged-exercise-caution-ahead-frigid-conditions/
Recycle your Christmastrees and wrapping paper
Free holiday tree pickup will occur onregularly scheduled trash days during the weeks of January 8 and January 15.Remove all lights, decorations, and tinsel and place the tree at the curb.Recycle gift wrapping paper in your recycle bin. But, please don’t put plasticbags, shredded paper, diapers, or greasy pizza boxes in recycle bins. They willcontaminate the entire load sending it to the Johnston landfill. At the currentrate of use there are only 15 years left at the landfill. Recycle right toextend its life!
PNPP deadline is January 15
Planting trees may be the last thing on your mind in the bitter cold;however, the next deadline for applying for trees through the ProvidenceNeighborhood Planting Program is coming up fast. It’s January 15. Find moreinformation at http://pnpp.org/
Providence Community Library news
PCL has been awarded $544,800 by theChamplin Foundation to repair, renovate and preserve the exterior of KnightMemorial Library. The grant will fund cleaning and renovations to all exteriormasonry as well as repairs to the roof, guttering, cornice, andskylights. The work will take place in Spring 2018.
Knight Memorial Library continues to beclosed on Saturdays. However, Saturday service is being offered in 2018 atSouth Providence Library (441 Prairie Ave). SouthProvidence is ADA compliant and climate-controlled. GED and ESL classes areoffered there on Saturdays.
Knight Memorial Library offers valuableservices to the community, access to computers for job seekers, children’sprograms, and more; but when PCL determines which libraries are open eveningsand weekends the numbers of users count. You can help support Knight by gettinga library card there, and checking out books and DVDs to enjoy during thesecold evenings.
