Dear Community Leaders, 

As Providence continues to work together to ensure the health and safety of our residents, we wanted to take this time share the latest announcements and updates. As always, please let us know if there is anything that I can do for you or additional information that you need!

Announcements:

COVID-19 Updates:

Social gatherings and mask usage continue to be compliance issues in Providence. Please do your best to help us stop the spread of COVID-19 by wearing a mask and limiting social gatherings.

Large Gathering Tip Line:

The State has set up a tip line to reach Rhode Island State Police to report large gatherings and people gathered in close contact. The number is 401-764-5554. For other infractions, such as a lack of mask-wearing, contact the Rhode Island Department of Health.

Have COVID-19 symptoms? Refer to our one-pager and get tested. The City currently hosts drive-up and walk-up COVID-19 test sites in Providence’s frontline communities. These tests are free of charge and information, including immigration status, is confidential. If you have symptoms, call your primary care physician. New patients can reach out to partners at the below contact information; bilingual personnel is available.

OPEN DOOR HEALTH, LOCATED AT THE SOUTHSIDE CULTURAL CENTER OF RHODE ISLAND

Drive-up and walk-up testing are available Monday through Thursday 12:00 PM-4:00 PM at 393 Broad Street. Referral from a primary care physician and insurance is not required. Open Door Health encourages patients to call 401- 648-4700 for assistance and to find more detailed clinic information can also be found here.

Walkup testing will be facilitated on August 17th from 2:00-4:00PM and August 22nd from 10:00AM-12:00PM in English, Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole. Appointment preferred.

COVID-19 Business Relief:

Commerce R.I. reopened the application for its Restore Rhode Island program, and the first round of the $50 million program will consider up to 1,500 requests on a first come, first served basis. A second round of applications will be accepted later this summer. Green Justice Zone Surveys:

The Racial and Environmental Justice Committee (REJC) is working with the City of Providence’s Office of Sustainability to make investments in frontline communities in alignment with the Climate Justice Plan. The City has set aside $1 million dollars of its Capital Improvement Plan for frontline communities to make decisions about these investments. The REJC has held community meetings in the winter and Spring to identify priorities. The Racial and Environmental Justice Committee (REJC) wants your perspective on investments in our community! Fill out and share this survey (in English or Spanish) to help refine the project ideas for the investment of $1 million dollars.

Update from Planning & Development

Neighborhood Greenway Virtual Meeting

As a reminder, on August 25th at 6:00 PM, the Department of Planning and Development will host a virtual public informational meeting about upcoming Neighborhood Greenway projects. This meeting will allow community members to learn more about neighborhood greenways and how they ﬁt into the larger Great Streets and Urban Trail Network vision.

During the meeting, City staff will provide an overview of proposed changes (which may include restriping, shared lane markings, speed lumps, and wayfinding signs) planned for the following streets in Fall 2020 to reduce speeding and improve safety:

   -  Aleppo Street (Manton to Riverside Park)
   - Delaine Street (Manton to Harris)
   - Tuxedo Avenue and Amherst Street (Atwells to Valley)
   - Sonoma Court (Delaine Street to Donigian Park)
   - Oxford and Ontario streets (Allens to Elmwood)
   - Sackett Street (Elmwood to Broad)
   - Farragut and Vermont avenues (Roger Williams Park to Michigan Ave)
   - Peace and Waverly streets (Prairie to 6/10 Service Road)
   - Fricker and Lockwood streets (Atwells to Westminster)
   - Knight, Washington, and Winter streets (Westminster to Prairie)

In mid-August, flyers will be distributed along these streets to encourage their attendance at the August 25th virtual public meeting. This event is also posted to Facebook atNeighborhood Greenway Virtual Meeting

In the Great Streets Master Plan, the City identified three main types of investments in the citywide Urban Trail Network:

 Off road shared use paths (similar to the off road sections of the Woonasquatucket River Greenway bike path or the East Bay Bike Path)

On road, two way, physically protected paths (similar to the recent two-way path constructed on Clifford Street in Downtown, or the planned path along the Woonasquatucket River on Kinsley Avenue)

Neighborhood greenways (modest enhancements— such as wayfinding signage, speed lumps, or shared lane markings— along smaller residential side streets to reduce speeding and ensure these streets are safe for people walking and biking)

The streets listed above fall under the third category of “neighborhood greenways”.

Mix it up!- Shaping the new Providence cultural plan

Virtual Kick-Off Party

What is the plan? A recipe that guides where and how resources will be invested. Come to the table!

Since 2009 the Creative Providence cultural plan has served as a dynamic blueprint for strengthening the creative sector and as a community-wide guide to public policy, public initiatives and private investments in the arts. Now, ACT and creative partners are reassessing our sector’s goals and strategies with plans to release the second Cultural Plan in spring 2021.

Join the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism and artists Tracy Jonsson, Shey Rivera Rios, and MJ Robinson to learn how you can be a part of this planning process.
