Leadership Rhode Island's Leadership, Virtually
Reimagining Ritual
Spiritual Leaders Bring Light into the Darkness
by Ashley Rappa with a video by Ian Barnard
Leadership, Virtually is an initiative by Leadership Rhode Island to explore leadership in the time of the Coronavirus pandemic. Each week chronicles how leaders locally and nationally are bringing people together virtually to make connections and offer critical support. The series is produced by a team of LRI alumnae with expertise in journalism, communication, digital technology, and nonprofit excellence.
What is the weight of a human soul? If you were to hold one in your hand, would it feel heavy with life lost, or would it seem to float, a wisp hovering just above your fingers?
Barnaby Evans, a 1995 alumnus of Leadership Rhode Island and the celebrated executive artistic director behind Providence’s WaterFire, has held hundreds of souls in his hands in the past few weeks, each of them Rhode Islanders taken by COVID-19.

Hi neighbors!
It was nice to hear back from some of you that the information I shared in my first correspondence was helpful and welcomed. As promised, I am continuing to share stories of our community’s collective resilience and provide ways for you to safely engage with the institution during these unprecedented times. While RISD’s physical campus remains closed, our faculty, staff and students remain committed and active in supporting Rhode Island.
If you know others who might be interested in receiving periodic updates from RISD, please encourage them to join our email list. I would love to include more neighbors and friends.
Sincerely,
Bethany Costello
Director, Community Relations
State of Operations
We are focused right now on both the fast approaching end of our spring semester and making plans for fall. As I mentioned in my last email, we will not hold any programming on campus or in-person in other locations this summer.
Since the pandemic prevents us from being together to honor our 2020 graduates in person, we are hosting a virtual celebration of their outstanding accomplishments and the conferral of their degrees on Saturday, May 30 at 9 am EDT at commencement.risd.edu. You are welcome to tune in.
For fall, given the uncertainty of how COVID-19 will persist, we are developing continuity plans for several different scenarios. We are using our mission and strategic plan as guideposts, along with three key principles: first and foremost—the safety and health of our whole community and our extended communities, second—the integrity of academic and museum programs, and third—the long-term sustainability of the institution. We will finalize and communicate our plan by June 15.
RISD Continuing Education Virtual Summer Programming
This summer, RISD Continuing Education Online is offering 150+ online courses ranging from weekend workshops for adults and teens, to the immersive 8-week Advanced Program for High School Students, to credit-bearing opportunities. These accessible, flexible and immersive learning experiences, which are taught by professional artists, designers and makers and can be accessed from anywhere, will run from June 22 – August 31, 2020.
Whether you are staying track with a certificate program, exploring a new subject or taking your very first course in art and design, we would love for you to join us this summer. To receive more information about our offerings and be notified when registration opens on May 18, join our Continuing Education email list.

RISD Museum Community Survey
The RISD Museum is part of a national research study to understand how nonprofit organizations can help during this COVID-19 crisis and in the future. To help represent our community in this national picture, we would be grateful if you could share your thoughts via this 15-minute, anonymous survey by Sunday, May 17. It asks how you’re spending time during the pandemic and how creativity, entertainment, culture, and other things fit into your life.
As a small token of appreciation for your participation, you’ll be entered to win one of 25 $100 VISA gift cards.

Please note: You may receive this survey invitation from more than one organization. If so, please only take the survey once.
Supporting the Community
RISD’s faculty, staff and students continue to seek out ways to help locally, including by supporting those on the front lines of this pandemic. Here are a few recent examples:
RISD technicians - the staff members who help students make optimal use of the high-end tools and equipment available in our specialized shops and labs—have shifted gears along with everyone else this spring, helping to produce personal protective equipment (PPE) for Rhode Island nursing homes, police officers and firefighters. books in the time of covid-19
Thank you all for checking in with book requests, window shopping and gift certificate purchases! As my local customers know, businesses are now allowed to reopen in Rhode Island and I have received many calls hoping to confirm this outcome. Unfortunately, I have not yet come up with a safe plan to do so. This week I am going to "rearrange the furniture" and work on obtaining a method for touch free payments. It seems that there will now be a long list of instructions involved to accomplish the small act of obtaining reading material! But I hope to find a way to make it happen soon.
Please continue to check my instagram, facebook and website for books you might like and email me with subjects and authors you need. I am still offering $2 local shipping and shop front pick up!
I have started to do some buying. Please email me for information on how the process works. If you have small, book-size boxes and packing materials you'd like to recycle drop them off! I'm in the shop most days 11-3.
Thank you for your patience and I hope to see you very soon!
Kristin
