New Design Revealed for Henderson Bridge. Early this month, the RI Department of Transportation held a virtual town hall meeting to share plans for a new Henderson Bridge, the construction of which could begin as soon as this summer. As neighbors may know, the state has received federal funds to redesign and replace the failing structure, modify the roadways and access points on either side of the bridge, and repair the Washington Bridge and access ramps at lower Gano street in Fox Point. Find a summary in PBN here; see the RIDOT presentation in full, here. Image, RIDOT.

Gano Street Development Moves Forward. At an epic hearing on Tuesday night that lasted nearly six hours, the City Plan Commission voted to approve a 5-story apartment building proposed by HV Collins for 99 Gano Street, at the corner of Gano and the 195 off-ramp (just north of the the entrance to the bike path). The developer, who in November applied for permission to build an even taller building, has since modified the design substantially to meet neighbors' demands and to come closer to complying with height and parking requirements of the city's Zoning Ordinance. While neighbors acknowledged these concessions, dozens spoke in opposition, listing concerns with height, traffic, environmental risks, appearance, precedent for future development, and more. See a write-up in PBN, here. Image, Providence Planning and Zoning/PBN.

Two Local Businesses to Close. Two local eateries have announced the sad news that they will close their doors, both due to the effects of the Covid pandemic. The Benefit Street Juice Bar, a favorite gathering spot for locals for more than seven years, announced its closure this month; likewise, the owners of the cafe-microcinema Acoustic Java announced closure this week after opening its doors this past September. Find the Juice Bar announcement on FB, here; see a write-up on Acoustic Java in GoLocalProv, here.
