  Tuesday 20 April 5:00pm   Mind the Climate Gap: Is Finance Stepping up on Climate as Governments Fail?    Over the last decade, emissions have risen as governments try and fail to impose climate regulations. Will the financial world succeed where governments have failed? In this panel discussion, experts in climate policy and investors trying to address climate change will discuss how companies and financial institutions are trying to step in where some nations fear to tread.    Wednesday 21 April 12:00pm   Race & Anti-Black Racism    In this panel discussion curated by Brown’s Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America in partnership with the Office of the Provost, scholars in race and psychological sciences will discuss the role race plays specifically in anti-Black racism.    Friday 23 April 12:00pm to Sunday 25 April 12:00pm   Cinema Ritrovato presents: ‘The Forgotten Front’ (2020)    As part of Il Cinema Ritrovato, the annual restored film festival, viewers are invited to screen “The Forgotten Front” for free. “The Forgotten Front” is a documentary recounting the war fought by the Allied armies in Central Italy from 1943 to 1945, the Nazi occupation of Bologna during the Republic of Salò, and the fight of the partisans to liberate the city with its people’s support.    Friday 23 April 2:00pm to Saturday 24 April 3:30pm   Unsettling Accounts: Intersectional Approaches to the Politics of Debt    Debt operates in unsettling ways as a mode of social control and discipline across axes of race, gender, sexuality, citizenship and ability. This two-day interdisciplinary symposium featuring presentations by six leading scholars examines the politics of debt within the histories and contemporary processes of racial capitalism, dispossession, colonialism and gender oppression. Moderated Q&A sessions will follow each panel.  Learn more
   Monday 26 April 2:00pm   Leading Local: Mayor Stephen K. Benjamin    Leading Local is a speaker series featuring mayors from across the country, discussing the challenges and opportunities of implementing policy changes at the city level. In this talk, James Diossa, the former mayor of Central Falls and current senior advisor at Brown’s Policy Lab, will chat with Stephen K. Benjamin, mayor of Columbia, South Carolina, about his economic revitalization of Main Street, his tenure as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and what it’s like to lead at the local level.    Tuesday 27 April 4:00pm   Invasion Biology and the Ethics of Biodiversity    Invasion biology — the field of ecology and conservation biology that interacts with introduced and invasive species — formed in the late 20th century in response to concerns about the conservation implications of some introduced species. In this presentation, Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Philosophy David Frank will clarify and evaluate competing ethical justifications of invasion biologists’ concerns with introduced species, advocating a pluralistic view that attempts to balance the diverse values at stake in the study and management of invasive species.    Wednesday 28 April 3:00pm   Racial Reckonings & the Future of the Humanities    The term “reckoning” denotes acts of calculation, estimation and debts paid. It can carry a sense of future settlements. It also refers to “ideas, opinions and judgments” as in the phrase, “I reckon.” To what extent, and how, might we imagine a racial reckoning via new work in arts and humanities? In the Centering Race Consortium’s first inaugural conference, scholars will unpack racial reckoning and the future of the humanities through lectures, roundtables and more.  Learn more
   Friday 30 April 12:00pm   The Sojourner Project/South Africa: Catastrophe::Cartography    The words “catastrophe” and “cartography” mean and remember their origins in each other, each produced by the other, each equal to the other. In the Black Atlantic, in the Black Pacific, in the Black Mediterranean, cartography is catastrophe, catastrophe is cartography. In this conversation, six contributors — academics, poets and artists — will dwell on the movement, symbolized by the double colon, between these concepts.  Learn more
   Friday 30 April 12:00pm   Unruly Visions: Queer Archives, Affective Histories    Gayatri Gopinath is a professor at New York University’s department of social and cultural analysis and the director of the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality. In this talk, Gopinath will discuss the intersection of transnational feminist and queer studies, postcolonial studies and diaspora studies.  Learn more
   Saturday 1 May 12:00pm   He Rises in Spirit and Power: Honoring the Life of Anani Dzidzienyo    In response to the tragic loss of Anani Dzidzienyo, the Department of Africana Studies/Rites and Reason Theatre at Brown will host a celebratory event honoring his legacy. Though there is no replacement for the joy and comfort of in-person gatherings, this event, held during Anani’s favorite weekend of the year, serves as a worthy alternative, with friends, family, students and colleagues from every point along Anani’s journey convening for an afternoon of performance, story and memory.     Thursday 22 October 9:00am to Thursday 30 June 5:00pm   Transcendent Futures    "Taking stock of where we’ve been. Moving beyond where we are." With the daunting challenges of the year 2020, including a global pandemic, renewed struggles for racial justice, and ongoing environmental and climate concerns, the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America’s new art exhibit features more than 20 artists whose artwork explores hope, connection and community, as we collectively strive to build a world that works for everybody.    Monday 1 February 9:00am to Saturday 1 May 5:00pm   Transient Matter: Assemblages of Migration in the Mediterranean    “Transient Matter” brings the realities, perils and humanity of migrations and border-crossings to life through an exhibition of things discarded by migrants who crossed the Aegean to reach Greece, artwork created by migrants in camps and detention centers once there, and photographs and videos produced by the curators. Originally held in person, this online exhibition differs slightly to accommodate the transition from physical to virtual.  Learn more
   Monday 12 April 9:00am to Saturday 15 May 5:00pm   Sherds!    Pottery has proven to be a critical archaeological resource due to its widespread use and accessibility throughout time. Sometimes archaeologists find whole pots during their excavations, but more often than not, they encounter broken pieces called sherds. This exhibit looks at archaeologists’ experiences with sherds and what these seemingly insignificant pieces of pottery can tell us about the past.  Learn more

| The Providence Art Club National Open Juried Exhibition 2021 is an exciting annual opportunity for non-member artists to exhibit in our historic galleries on College Hill in Providence. Artists from across the United States are welcome to apply to one of the premier juried exhibitions in the country. 
Applications are due via CallforEntry.org by April 23!
This show features $6,000 in prizes, including a Best in Show Award of $1,000 and will be juried by curator and art historian Dr. Jamie Gabbarelli of The Art Institute of Chicago. The physical exhibition will be accompanied by an online gallery.  |
