ICYMI: A new update is coming today, but as of Dec. 30, Rhode Island was up to 87,949 confirmed coronavirus cases and 1,777 people had died since the beginning of the pandemic. There were 426 people in the hospital. A total of 17,020 people had received the first dose of the vaccine.

New year, new president at The Miriam Hospital.

Maria Ducharme, who started her nursing career at The Miriam in 1987 and rose through the ranks over the last three decades, took the helm as the hospital’s president on Jan. 1. She replaced the retiring Arthur Sampson.

“I am thrilled to be offered the opportunity to occupy a role that will be integral to shaping the future of The Miriam Hospital, contributing to the overall strategy of Lifespan and furthering our mission of excellent patient centered care,” Ducharme said in a statement. “I have had the privilege of working with an amazing group of colleagues, and as I step into this role, I look forward to advancing and enhancing our commitment to being a highly reliable organization, one that has a deep culture of trust and transparency and that continually drives excellence in quality and safety.”

The Miriam is located on Providence’s East Side, and has more than 2,800 employees, including 650 nurses. As a senior vice president and chief nursing officer, Ducharme helped lead the hospital to six Magnet recognitions for providing quality care and nursing excellence and innovation.

Ducharme earned a bachelor’s degree from Rhode Island College, a master’s degree from the University of Rhode Island, and a doctorate of nursing practice from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions.

The Miriam is part of the Lifespan network of hospitals, which is beginning one of the most consequential years in its history. Lifespan and Care New England, the state’s two largest hospital organizations, are in talks to merge to create an academic medical center with Brown University.
