Councilman Goncalves' Announces Ward 1 Movies In The Park (At India Point Park)
Mark your calendars! I'm proud to announce that we will be launching a free 'Movies In The Park' series! We look forward to bringing our community together to show family-friend blockbusters on a big screen at India Point Park. We encourage you to have a family picnic, bring a beach chair/towel, support Naragansett Brewery, and more for our summer movie night series at India Point Park. 
 Here are the movie dates: 

This Thursday, July 8th at 8 PM

 "Some Kind of Funny Porto Rican?": A Cape Verdean American Story
Directed by Dr. Claire Andrade-Watkins. Read her bio here and here. 

 This feature documentary tells the untold tragedy and scandal of what happened to a vibrant community of immigrants from the Cape Verde Islands in the Fox Point section of Providence Rhode Island who were forcibly displaced by urban renewal to make way for coffee shops, antique stores and elegantly restored houses. It is the first in a trilogy of documentaries about Cape Verdean community in the Fox Point section of Providence, Rhode Island.

We are showing this film in collaboration with SPIA Media Productions, Inc. & The Mile of History Association.

Dear Members and Friends:
Come for a walk along the Seekonk shoreline, beginning at the Blackstone Park kiosk on Parkside Road proceeding through the park, along the Seekonk shore and returning to the kiosk. Your guide, Greg Gerritt, is a noted urban naturalist, environmental advocate, and wildlife videographer–see his work on the youtube channel Moshassuckcritters. Greg will discuss urban wildlife, the making of wildlife videos, and the ecological challenges in the area.

On Saturday, July 10th, from 9 to 10 AM.

Look for animal homes, food remains, tracks, and scat with our fun scavenger hunt that helps you collect data you can then repeat at home.

Join us for our next free family event, Totally Turtles, on Saturday, July 10th, at 10:00 am.  Meet at Blackstone Field, across from the Narragansett Boat Club (2 River Drive, Providence, RI 02906).

Registration required.  Masks and distancing strongly encouraged.

This event is part of our monthly “Art & Science in the Park” series with 15 Minute Field Trips, focusing on community action to protect wildlife, promote biodiversity, and combat climate change. Learn about local flora and fauna through art and science activities.  Great for families or to use in the classroom. Stay longer to enjoy the park, pick up litter, or use your new knowledge to educate others.

This event is led by Melissa Guillet, from 15 Minute Field Trips. Melissa has taught art for over 20 years and is an avid nature-lover involved in gardening, hiking, and collecting data as a citizen scientist.

| A - Charles Irons and Charles Russell, manufacturers of pins and charms, built the building at the corner of Chesnut and Clifford  in 1903–04.   Known then and today as the Irons and Russell Building, it was the city’s first electrically powered building. (learn more about this building on the Jewelry District Historic Tour) |

SUMMER OF SOUL is part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was never seen and largely forgotten-until now. SUMMER OF SOUL shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present.

The Harlem Cultural Festival took place the same summer as the famed Woodstock festival, and boasted an attendance on par with that concert 100 miles away. Over 300,000 people attended, yet it received virtually no coverage from the main- stream media. The 40 hours of never-seen-before footage was originally shot by the late television pioneer Hal Tulchin, but has remained in storage for the past 50 years, keeping this incredible event in America’s history lost - until now.

The feature includes concert performances by artists including Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly and the Family Stone, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The Staple Sisters, The 5th Dimension and more.
