Rain transitions to sleet and freezing rain,

leading to ice concerns today

Cold temperatures drop down across southern New England today, transitioning rain to ice.

Late morning through the afternoon and evening, freezing rain and sleet will be coating roadways with slush and ice, making for tricky driving and a slow evening commute.

Mid to late morning southern New England sees ice development

So far this morning, rain showers are pushing through. Between 1 to 2 inches of rain are expected, the issue there being all of that standing water freezing over through the day and overnight.

We are actively watching the colder temperatures drop down from the north with that transition to ice.

The colder air is likely to arrive just in time for the morning commute through Massachusetts, and a slightly later arrival time across southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Timing of when freezing rain, sleet and ice develops

So, if you plan to hit the roads anytime from now through noon, be aware of that transition and factor in a few extra minutes for your drive.

The later morning commute across Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts is affected

Temperatures slip below freezing heading into the early afternoon.

As we near the evening commute, icy roadways are expected with slush and slick pockets pretty much everywhere.

The storm begins to peter out close to sundown, meaning any frozen precipitation pulls away as we near the later evening hours.

But temperatures in the teens and single digits overnight and into early Saturday morning means everything will be flash freezing!

Dangerous driving early Saturday is likely.
