    If the 50% homestead exemption is still in effect (and at the same rate), then my tax would indeed be about the same. I wonder how many others saw the ad in today's paper and came to the same conclusion as I did. It seems to me that the ad should have mentioned the exemption so as to allay fears of a huge increase. Perhaps my reaction was the one they wanted. A lot of angry taxpayers would then start yelling for a return of the state's assistance to the city.

You've forgotten to calculate the 50% Homestead Exemption into your taxes.  Mine are actually going down.

      Last month we received our latest property tax revaluations. Many of us were shocked at the increases. To hold down the furor, the letter said that the increase did not represent the actual tax, only the valuation. We had to wait for the new tax rate to see if our taxes went up or down (yeah, right). Well, the other shoe has dropped. This morning's Journal has a message from the city explaining the new tax rate of $22.61 per thousand. While this is lower than the previous rate ($30.23), the large increases in valuation have drastically raised our taxes. My property tax has DOUBLED! The city claims that the overall tax collections have only increased 5.25%. Somehow, I don't think so. Clearly, this is intended to outrage the citizens of Providence so we will raise a big stink to get the State to contribute more to the city. I'm tired of being a pawn in the battle between the City and the State. We have to vote out every single damn office holder in the city at the next election.
