I really dig the fact that within walking distance of my house is:
1) my bank
2) two drugstores
3) two terrific Indian restaurants (no comment on the third) and a cool little spice store
4) at least five other restaurants I'd gladly eat at daily
5) an independent toy store
6) the Rochambeau library
7) Lippitt Park
8) Blackstone Boulevard
9) my family doc
10) the #42 and #99 buses
11) the East Side-Mount Hope Y
12) two dry cleaners with on-site tailoring
13) a great bakery and cafe
14) two other cafes with different vibes, decors, and bills of fare
15) a ballet company that has achieved national recognition
16) one of the best chocolatiers in the country
17) an eclectic gift shop
18) a decent liquor and wine store
19) and yes, a high-quality community hospital
I used to live on the corner of Bleecker and Mercer in NoHo, but even that neighborhood couldn't rival this list. (Okay, maybe we could use a few decent nightclubs and a movie theater.)
But I lived in lower Manhattan only through the good graces of my folks and their NYU-subsidized housing. My husband and I were able to afford Summit when we moved here in 1996. Here's hoping the housing slump keeps it real.

P.S. Is anybody interested in organizing block-by-block neighborhood watches? I bet we have a critical mass of dog walkers, elders, stay-at-home parents, freelancers, telecommuters, and others who could keep an eye out for suspicious activity and report it to the police...
