[Summit] Trader Joe's

I am certainly willing to help, lobby, petition, whatever. There has
been discussion on this list and elsewhere. For a few years the buzz
was that "they are coming within two years" -- that's even what the
clerks up in Mass would say, that it is the most heavily requested site
in NE. Apparently they got very very close and then the building
arrangement fell through. Then about a year ago the same people said
that it was "off the table". No one seems to know or say exactly why --
they apparently did try to get special dispensation for liquor liscenses
but that failed. But even in Mass they are only allowed 3 (Framingham
Cambridge and ?). There was also talk that they required a certain
amount of parking spaces (but anyone ever been to their Brookline Store?
Or Copley Square?). Also talk about Whole Foods "blocking them" (how?).
Not surprising, although they co-exist quite nicely in nearby plazas on
Route 9. And talk about other "RI issues". Okay --- then what about
Seekonk?
Bottom line is this is a very popular, fussy and tight-lipped chain. I
am glad to hear that consumer demand brought a store to PA. And if
Summit could pressure the powers that be to
reopen a middle school in two years we certanly can organize around this
effectively. My suggestion would be to focus on the petitioning to them
in whatever manner seems best. I would not waste energy looking for a
space for them until we know that if we "build it they will come".
Somehow we have to get back on their map and get them to look past
their issues. I suspect they do not realize how truly unbelievably
popular they would be here, especially if the decision-makers are out
West. I doubt if any city officials are willing to get involved in any
public way, but my impression from one of the North Main Street meetings
a couple of years ago was that Providence Planning and Development was
certainly in the loop. Maybe someone with connections could try and get
some "off the record" info. Until then I'll be caravaning to
Framingham on occasional Sundays......

I too would love a Trader Joe's here but the fact that stores cannot
sell food and booze together in this state has made Trader Joe's
reluctant and unwilling to locate here. Perhaps they can get a special
dispensation (I think they had to in Mass.) but don't hold your breath.

Do you know if they've ever opened up parallel storefronts, with the
wine store adjacent to the main store? I'd be happy to spearhead this
project, if we need to unify to demonstrate greater consumer demand.

I, too, would LOVE to have a Trader Joe's here, and Carol's suggestion
sounds like a great solution to the concern about selling liquor. (I
myself don't drink, but I recognize this is a problem for TJ)
I had been wondering how we could follow up on Marco's suggestion of
something like a joint letter. I don't think we can take a position as
the Summit Neighborhood Association - at least not without it's being
approved at a meeting. However, if Carol is willing to coordinate our
efforts, I think writing TJ as a group of local residents could be
effective.
Everybody who agrees could sign on. We might also get signatures from
folks not in Summit - you don't have to live next door to the store to
patronize it.
I'm even wondering about looking into putting up a petition online
- there are several sites that provide that option. Does anybody know
the cost of it? I just signed such a petition addressed to store owners
(asking them not to carry cloned meat), so the appeal on such petitions
does not need to be to government entitities.
Blessings,
Liberty G

I've just put my best (short) pitch on the Trader Joe's location request
site, emphasizing that:
1) while the greater east side has managed to sustain two branches of
Whole Foods and the East Side Marketplace, we have no neighborhood
grocery store
2) Summit is full of professionals who love exotic and healthy foods,
but don't have much time to cook
3) they could make a fortune by opening a TJ's on North Main Street
I'd be happy to start an e-petition that we could send to TJ's. My
boneheaded suggestion is to forward the names, e-addresses, phone
numbers, and relevant work or mailing addresses of all those interested
in seeing a TJ's in the neighborhood.
Additionally, I could draft a little insert for the next newsletter to
solicit all those not electronically inclined. For that matter, we
could put up flyers to get input from others in the neighborhood.
I could see posting at the East Side-Mount Hope Y, the Miriam,
Rochambeau library, and neighborhood businesses that would not be
adversely affected by TJ's competition. Does this sound like a plan?
