Well, there is I-95.

On the face of it, it might feel like changing North Main St. from 2 lanes
in each direction to 1 would cut capacity in half. However, North Main has
dedicated left and right turn lanes at critical intersections, which could
be preserved, or better yet, improved. That, with an improvement in traffic
signal timing - both linear timing of greens and better timing of left
arrows, etc, I bet the impact of the lost lanes could be minimized.

As for traffic calming vs enforcement, I say, let's have both. Traffic
calming is nice, but enforcement will always be needed. It would be nice if
we had a comprehensive plan on the calming infrastructure, and could phase
in elements whenever major work was being done, with perhaps a couple of
major overhauls undertaken at any one time. A priority list, some
budgeting, some good design, and not just always deferring to the
automobile.

Instead of asking where the cars will go when we take a lane away, we
should ask how many cars will come if we add a lane.
