You have to have some arteries moving through a town, or traffic during
commute times gets insane. I agree, you could change the character of North
Main Street drastically by taking it down to a single lane and adding bike
lanes. That'd be super nice! But you have to figure out what you're going
to do with all the displaced traffic.

Also, I don't find crossing North Main hard ... you go to a light, wait for
it to change, and cross at the crosswalk. Speed of traffic in these
instances tends to be 0 mph.
