The proof is in the pudding. There are already noticeably fewer children at the tot lot now, and they're clustered on the playground side. I don't see any pickup kickball games. I guess kids staying home cooped up with screens is preferable? I say anything that gets kids out safely playing and active outdoors is fantastic. The gently used toys were the single best thing about that public space (and we'd travel to Humboldt Park by Wayland Square for similar fun, but no longer). Obviously the city should remove broken items with dangerous edges, but most could have stayed. Based on emails here, the now-completely stripped clean tot lot is aesthetically pleasing to some of the neighborhood adults, who are justifying that negative neatnick opinion with all sorts of rationale -- to them I'd say: how would your young kids vote on this matter? Are they having more fun outside now that the used toys are gone?

Sometimes less is more and I for one applaud the City's attempt to maintain a safe, clean and open space for kids to frolic. Please bring balls, pails, bubbles, checkers etc but leave your giant mildewed castle at home. If you give the city 24 hours notice (1-800-972-4545) they will happily pick up your large toys curbside.
