Agreed.  I think what’s sometimes missing in this discussion is that regardless of the reason (stated or otherwise) for putting the cameras in place, the effect of having them here is potentially good:

1.  reducing speeding in areas where there are young pedestrians, thereby increasing student safety;

2.  potentially freeing up the Providence city police to do more community engagement work, rather than sitting in their cars waiting for speeders.  With a limited budget to spend on policing, we don’t need the police to do work that can be done by a traffic “dalek” (as my daughter likes to call the camera boxes).  The cameras provide an opportunity for us to consider how we would like the police to be engaging in the community instead of monitoring for speeders.
