When I received my owner-occupied residential property tax bill, I read that a 40% homestead exemption was reflected in my bill. Not true. When I did the math, my homestead exemption was 39.98338%. Close, but not 40% as stated on the bill. Has anyone else done the math on the homestead exemption on their owner-occupied residential property tax bill?
The difference between what the City was allowing as an exemption was only $63 LESS than what a 40% exemption would be; less exemption, more tax. It wasn’t the dollar difference that bothered me, but the principle that the bill stated the exemption was 40%. That’s what motivated me to go to the Providence Tax Assessor’s office to have my bill corrected, or at least get an explanation as to why there was a discrepancy. I told the employee of the discrepancy, and was given a 40% exemption with the difference applied to my tax due as a credit in the 1st quarter. The employee was very courteous and responsive to my concern.
