In this virtual conversation, Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh Beatriz Luna will explore cognitive development in adolescents and why kids make the decisions they make. Du Bois is recognized as a pioneer of American scientific sociology and as someone who made foundational contributions to race, urban and community sociology. Monday 11 May 9:00am to Sunday 17 May 11:55pmBell Gallery Collection Highlight: Llyn FoulkesEach week, the David Winton Bell Gallery will hold an online mini-exhibition by delving into a piece from its collection. This week’s event features Llyn Foulke’s 1973 mixed media piece “To Paul.” A mysterious, faceless figure smeared with blood is depicted at bust length in a suit, presented against a pale blue ground. Only the forehead, ear, chin, neck, partial cheek, bottom lip and brows are visible — the eyes, nose and top lip are replaced with a sepia-hued photograph of a pair of legs moving on tiptoe, as if in the middle of a dance step.Learn more
Friday 1 May 9:00am to Monday 25 May 5:00pmDigital Tour of the Nightingale-Brown HouseA team of recent Brown graduates worked with staff at the John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage to create a virtual self-guided tour of this historic Benefit Street home. Built in 1792, Nightingale-Brown house was home to five generations of the Brown family before it was donated to the University.Learn more

| We are excited to share more details of our National Open Juried Exhibition, which we hope you'll explore online throughout the month of May. Although we cannot mount this show in our galleries due to social distancing, we plan to continue to promote the work of the many talented artists from across the nation who are included!
Below, you can find a links to the Facebook album with all the accepted works, as well as a link to our Issuu catalogue which includes biographies for each artist. Be sure to join the Art Club on Facebook and Instagram, where we will regularly be sharing work from this show in May.
We will also announce 14 prizewinning works totaling $6,000 in cash awards on Sunday, May 10 on Facebook! In the mean time, all of us at the Art Club continue to wish you the best of health.

| Over the course of just a few weeks, our lives have been transformed. PCL staff have proven themselves to be resilient and flexible as they have come up with innovative ways to support library users. | Responding to COVID-19: Making 3D Face Shields |


| The launch of PVD Young Makers injected lots of creative thinking and new energy in our library spaces. When the libraries closed to the public, Seiji Abe and his colleagues from our partner organization FabNewport, working in conjunction with the RI Rapid Solvers Group, switched gears and set up a factory line of 3D printers at Rochambeau Library. To date they have manufactured thousands of 3D-printed faceshields for front line health workers in Rhode Island. Read the full story. |
