Brown To Present Revisions to Neighbors. A lot has happened since mid-March. Thanks to the participation of Fox Point neighbors—including some readers of this newsletter—a group of more than 90 Fox Point residents signed a letter of concern to Brown University president Christina Paxson regarding two very large dormitories proposed for Brook Street at Power. Neighbors’ concerns related largely to design and scale. “The [proposed] building is too massive and blocky and is incompatible with the neighborhood,” writes primary author Arria Bilodeau in the letter to Paxson. Since then, Brown has updated its plans—and will present them to neighbors at our FPNA meeting this coming Monday. Demo Draws Dismay. As many Fox Point neighbors know, the 200 year-old Federal-style house at 312 Wickenden Street, most recently the home of the Duck and Bunny snuggery, was demolished last weekend. Several residents have expressed distress, even anger, at the news, not only with regard to the demolition itself, but the lack of notice to neighbors. In fact, while the owner of the snuggery did not notify neighbors of the specific timing of the demo, he did share his intentions last year. Some neighbors may remember that FPNA held a public discussion on this issue in January 2020, and in consultation with members of the Providence Preservation Society, sent an urgent letter of concern to the owner. Unfortunately, the property is not protected by preservation laws. And while this demolition may be especially disheartening, is only one of a spate of recent examples in Fox Point. As city officials have suggested to neighbors at FPNA meetings over last few years, if we want to protect our old buildings, we need to enact meaningful changes to public policies. Local Tours Resume. Good news! Our friends in the Jewelry District have resumed their wildly popular tours of the JD. Tickets are free but have already sold out in April. Find information and tickets, here. Image, here. 

Composting Program Begins on Gano. Calling all composters! Leaders at the Fox Point Community Garden, which is located on Gano Street near the Dunkin' Donuts and ball fields, have partnered with the nonprofit Harvest Cycle to implement a new, improved composting program. The new pick-up/drop-off service, which began April 5, costs $10 a month (free for SNAP recipients and garden members) and replaces an ailing system. Pizzeria Expansion. Robert Andreozzi, owner of Marvin pizzeria, will share a proposal to add outdoor table service in George M. Cohan Square.

Current Issues and Events. Hear updates on the Crook Point Bridge design competition, the National Grid tree planting committee, and more. Please bring your questions and concerns about the neighborhood!

Well, gosh, another month has gone by. More and more of us have gotten jabbed with Covid vaccine. And, despite the shutdowns, things haven’t stopped happening around the District and the town. You’ll find we’ve got a jam-packed agenda for our April meeting. 

ZOOM in to hear from interesting people, including:

   - The new Executive Director of the Providence Animal Rescue League will fill us in on how operations at PARL have been turned upside down by Covid.
   - The owners of Bayberry Garden will, we hope, explain why their new restaurant opening soon at 225 Dyer Street won’t serve bayberries and won’t need weeding — It’s going to be more fun than that!
   - Brown VP Al Dahlberg will offer updates from the University about developments inside and outside the Jewelry District.

Zoom in for news and discussion on important topics:

   - What’s up — or down — with the Providence Planning Department?
   - Rock solid protection for the Pedestrian Bridge to fend off rampaging ATVs.
   - Climate challenges for our low-lying waterfront.
   - More opportunities for public input with the 195 Commission.
