| As you know, we’ve been closely monitoring Henri, which has strengthened to a hurricane and could be the first direct hurricane to strike our coast since Hurricane Bob in 1991.

On behalf of the Providence Emergency Management Agency, here is a quick update on the pending storm and PEMA’s Emergency Operations Center activation plan:

The wind field of Henri has been expanding on the east side of the storm. Track has shifted slightly eastward, with landfall expected between eastern Long Island and near the CT/RI border Sunday afternoon.

   - Hurricane Warnings in effect for coastal RI (including Block Island) and portions of southern CT.
   - Tropical Storm Warning in effect for inland CT, RI, and the south coast of MA (including Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket.
   - Storm Surge Warning in effect for all of CT, RI, and southern MA coastlines, as far north as Chatham.
   - Storm impacts from late tonight into early Monday, with heavy rain possibly lingering into Monday as Henri weakens rapidly over land.

The track of the storm continues to shift but likely threats from this storm include:

   - Damaging winds, especially east of Henri's track.
   - Storm surge flooding.
   - Rainfall and flooding, especially along and west of Henri's track.
   - Dangerous marine conditions.
   - Tropical storm or hurricane-force winds.

In coordination with the American Red Cross, the City has opened a regional shelter beginning Saturday evening at 8:00 pm. The shelter will be located at the Providence Career & Technical Academy, 41 Fricker Street, Providence [directly facing Central & Classical High Schools, between Westminster, Cranston & Brosd Streets] and will be open to all individuals needing a safe place to shelter from the storm. No pets will be allowed in the shelter and water and snacks will be provided. Masks will be required in the shelter at all times and COVID-19 precautions will be closely followed.

The Department of Public Works will be checking storm drains to ensure that they are clear of debris. Residents are asked to please assist the Public Works Department by ensuring leaves and debris are cleared from street drains and catch basins in front of their homes and on corners, as significant rain and local flooding is likely. Likewise, the city’s Parks Department will be closely monitoring for down trees throughout the city. Please report any down trees to 3-1-1.

Officials will also closely monitor areas prone to flooding and work closely with the Army Corps of Engineers, the federal agency responsible for operating the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier.

Spin has been securing bicycles and removing scooters from streets today in preparation for inclement weather.

Mariners and residents have been advised to avoid any activity on the water, as offshore rip currents and strong seas are expected.

Additional Information:

UNDERSTAND YOUR FLOOD RISK

Flooding is the most common and costly hazard in New England and certain parts of Providence are more likely to flood than others. Learn about your home or business’ flood risk with the following resources:

   - Find out whether your property is in a flood-prone or high-risk area using the Rhode Island Floodplain Viewer.
   - Additional resources on floodplain mapping are available from the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency.

KNOW WHERE TO SEEK SHELTER

If a storm comes and a mandatory evacuation is not ordered for your location, decide whether to shelter in place or seek shelter elsewhere.

   - Gather what you’ll need to shelter in place or evacuate ahead of time.
