> I had hoped this first email of 2021 would be one highlighting only good things happening on our campus and in our community. However, as I write this, the chaos brought to the Capitol early this week?is still reverberating around the world with images and stories both upsetting and disappointing. And yet, there is still hope on the horizon.

> In response to the events in Washington, DC, President Somerson sent a letter to the campus reaffirming RISD?s institutional commitment to a community that benefits from diversity, inclusiveness, and equity, free of systemic barriers and incidents of discrimination, harassment, and violence.

> ?We as a community and a country must come together to make it clear that we will not tolerate violence, and will not allow the results of a free and fair election to be overturned. We must reaffirm our values, our humanity and the will of the people, particularly those who fought and still fight for their right to vote. > RISD Wintersession begins January 11 and will run through February 12. This year, RISD Winterssion classes will be offered online only, with limited exceptions made for on-campus and in-person make-up coursework. Faculty and staff whose work does not require an on-campus presence are asked to not come to campus during Wintersession.

> For the Spring 2021 semester, which begins February 22, RISD will again operate a de-densified campus. This means students, faculty and staff on campus will adhere to a multi-layered regime of health safety protocols ? with core studio- and shop-based courses offered in person, while other courses will be offered via remote means or in a hybrid remote/embodied version, and those staff who are able to perform their jobs remotely will continue to work from home. > Pivoted Continuing Education classes online and achieved record enrollment: Despite canceling both Young Artist classes (ages 6?12) and Pre-College, teen enrollment was up by 86 percent and Adult Extension is up by 30 percent year-over-year for fall. The percentage of classes with 10 or more students has grown from 38 to 90 percent. Before COVID-19, the percentage of CE students was hyper-local: 90 percent of the student population lived in RI, CT or MA. That number has now flipped with only 10 percent of the student population being from this tri-state area.

> Deadline Extended for Local Homeowners. As many neighbors know, the City has asked residential homeowners in the City to "recertify their homestead" in order to receive a tax exemption on their July 2021 property taxes (and beyond). The application deadline, originally set for mid-January, has been extended to February 12. The process takes approximately five minutes and requires a driver's license/ID and a Property ID number (PID). Find the application and relevant info, here. Questions? > City to Retrieve Trees. The City has announced free pickup of discarded Christmas trees on regularly scheduled trash pick-up days through January 29. But remember: don't bag your tree!
