| NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS
City Planners Hear Feedback on Strategy for Affordable Housing. As neighbors may know, the City's Department of Planning released a draft report early this year outlining a proposed ten-year housing strategy for the City. "The need for safe, secure, affordable housing has never been more urgent than it is now," commented principal planner Jess Pflaumer at an informational meeting last Thursday. The Department plans to release a final report later this winter based on public feedback. Find a write-up in EcoRI News here. Find the report itself here. And speaking of housing (design), see architect Will Morgan's laments, here, on some of the "truly cheap"-looking new buildings in Fox Point. Image, here.
City Wards to be Redrawn. Shortly after the New Year, the Providence City Council established a committee to examine and reconfigure the boundaries of the City's 15 wards. The process will last approximately four months and may involve the introduction of "Councilors at Large." Find a thoughtful overview of the situation in Ward 2 Councilor Helen Anthony's recent newsletter, here. (Also, if you do not receive updates from our Ward 1 councilor John Goncalves, find his most recent newsletter, here.) Image, here.
Lanes to Shift on Henderson Bridge. The RI Department of Transportation has announced a shift in traffic patterns for the Henderson Bridge. Starting tomorrow and lasting for approximately two years, all east- and west-bound traffic will take place in single lanes on the south side of the bridge, thus allowing space for construction on the north side of the structure. Read the travel advisories here and here; learn more about the long-term project, here. Image, here.
Got Socks? Organizers of the annual Buy Nothing Day Coat Exchange have cancelled this year's popular coat drive due to the pandemic—but they encourage neighbors to donate thick, warm socks instead. Just bring your donations (socks must be brand new) to the Hot Club until March 15. Learn more about the drive here and here. Meanwhile, read about Fox Point clothier Marc Allen's generous clothing donations, here. |
