[Summit] Trucking Center on Providence/Pawtucket Line

Hopefully, someone in Pawtucket can discourage this proposed project.  Bradley VanDerStad has been working to make neighborhood residents aware of the situation, and he started a petition. Hi.

In the latest issue of Providence Magazine, I was reviewing the article on Ward 3 candidates and was alarmed to read about the proposed trucking center at the old Microfibres factory site on the Providence/Pawtucket line. This is the large abandoned parcel across the street from Jordan?s Jungle in the 545 mixed-use mill building.

I have had a workshop at 250 Esten Ave. for the last 3 years and am very familiar with the neighborhood and its traffic at all hours. I pass the Microfibres site every single day. Reading about the project in Providence Magazine is the first I?ve learned of it. There is nothing posted on site as far as I can tell. My initial concern is for heavy truck traffic on roads (and particularly narrow or acute angle corners) that are not designed for large tractor-trailer trucks. The intersections of Esten Ave. and Moshassuck St., Main St. and Moshassuck St., and Main St. and Grenville St. are not designed for large truck radius turns. In short, trucks must take up both lanes of traffic in order to negotiate turns at any of these intersections. This situation combined with current bus-stop locations, stop lights, and poor line of sight from various side roads is a recipe for backed up traffic, more danger to pedestrians and bicyclists, and accidents of all varieties.

Has there been a site plan review? Is anyone in Pawtucket looking at this situation seriously? What say do we have as an impacted neighborhood? Even if my immediate concerns were alleviated, I would be very, very concerned about increased large truck traffic on Esten Ave., Hope/East St., Main St. and Pawtucket Ave. Large truck idling (illegal but not enforced - I?ve called the Pawtucket police station and they knew NOTHING about the anti-idling law) and other problems would be serious issues.
