Year 2003 Neighborhood Notes

Fall Newsletter Published

Oct 27 - The November newsletter went to press today, with a continued focus on neighborhood opposition to Miriam Hospital's plans for their main campus. Other headlines concern a new historic district in Summit, problems with the traffic calming project, news of CVS, Cumberland Farms, Community Police and more.

Summit Historic District Approved

Oct 7 - The Providence Preservation Society sent word today that the Summit Avenue Historic District was approved by the National Park Service and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Eight years in the making, the Summit Avenue district is just the first of what we hope will be many historic district designations in our neighborhood.

City Considering I-Zone Revamp

Sep 1 - On July 21, the Department of Planning issued a Request for Comments on the zoning regulations that affect educational and healthcare institutions. SNA responded and we are looking forward to reviewing the proposed new regulations.

Signs Signal Miriam Opposition

Jun 24 - Summit residents fed up with Miriam's long expansion in our neighborhood and determined to stop the hospital's latest building proposal are letting the world know how they feel. Lawn signs with the message "Miriam: No New Buildings!" began appearing this evening throughout Summit Neighborhood. Join the campaign and help protect our neighborhood from Miriam's endless cycle of growth.

Building Moratorium Stops Miriam Expansion

Jun 16 - The six month moratorium on Miriam Hospital's expansion, which was approved by the City Council on June 5th, took effect today without Mayor Cicilline's signature. The measure, which was championed by Councilman Kevin Jackson, calls for a "full and complete impact study" of Miriam's proposed project. Summit neighbors need to contact the Mayor and urge him to support both the moratorium and study. Our future depends on it!

CVS Drops Plan For Sign

May 15 - At this evening's Zoning Board hearing, CVS planned to request zoning relief for increased signage and for an animated electronic sign at their Hope Street location. SNA opposed the variances (see our January newsletter), primarily due to the electronic sign. Shortly before the hearing, CVS decided to drop the animated sign and agreed to do additional landscaping, and the SNA officially reversed its opposition. But it was too late to stop the many CVS neighbors who came out to testify! In the end, CVS got their variance, but with several additional restrictions. A very good result for the neighborhood! Credit is due to CVS for doing the right thing, albeit at the last minute.

Yard Sale Is Best Ever

May 10 - The SNA's Twelfth Annual Yard Sale was our best ever. We didn't think we could outdo last year's performance, but Summit neighbors came through with more donations of great stuff than ever before. Thanks to everyone who donated and a special thanks to all the volunteers to helped set up and run the sale.

Stop Lifespan!

Apr 18 - Lifespan plans to build a towering six-story building in our quite, residential neighborhood. This latest round of institutional expansion is being met by organized opposition from the hospital's neighbors.

May Newsletter Published

Apr 14 - The May newsletter went to press today, with a special focus on Lifespan's plans to build a six-story building in our neighborhood and a growing movement among neighbors that oppose it. Also inside: an update on our traffic calming project and an announcement of our Yard Sale.

State Approves Summit Historic District

Feb 12 - The State Review Board approved the National Register nomination for the Summit Avenue Historic District today. The nomination now goes to the National Parks Service for final approval.

Annual Meeting Features Police Chief Esserman

Feb 4 - Providence's new Police Chief Dean Esserman spoke about community police and his plans for the Department. Pich Chhoeun, Director of the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services described this new office and his role in helping city residents. Joining them were Councilman Kevin Jackson and Community Policy Officer George Periera. See inside for more information.
