April Cleanup 2002

Some of this year's volunteers
The City of Providence and Groundwork Providence each year sponsor April Cleanups. Residents throughout the City organize to clean up sites in their neighborhoods during the month of April. Groundwork Providence and the City provide gloves, trash bags and trash pickup to each cleanup site.

SNA Picks Concord Street Site

Our morning's work
This year the SNA led a cleanup on Saturday, April 27th at Concord Street, below the Smithfield Avenue overpass. The long-neglected site accumulates trash from the roadway above, and seems to be a favorite location for illegal dumping. Neighborhood volunteers pulled a metal cabinet, a table saw, a small shop's worth of auto parts, and 100's of beer bottles from this small patch of land.

SNA Board member Greg Gerritt acted as Cleanup Coordinator for this effort. Joining him were fellow SNA Board members, and some neighbors from Concord Street. In all 10 volunteers spent their Saturday morning pulling trash from the thick overgrowth. A patch of poison ivy kept them on their toes!

Looking much better

Three hours and a partial-dumpster-full of trash later, the view from the roadway was greatly improved. And yet, there is still plenty of garbage left for a future cleanup. The northwest section extends back several hundred yards, all the way to the Shaw's Plaza parking lot.

With a cleanup, many hands really do make light work. Consider joining us next year, and help improve some overlooked corner of our neighborhood.
