BETA Group Presents Results, Plan

Martha presents study data
On October 9th, 2001, from 7-9pm, more than 50 Summit area residents gathered at Hillside Health Center to hear the results of a traffic study, and to see the first public presentation of a traffic calming plan for the neighborhood. (see the presentation slides).

Consultants with BETA Group and Gates Leighton & Associates first presented the data they have collected thus far for speeds and traffic counts on selected streets. While traffic volumes do not seem to be excessive on most streets, the data on traffic speeds reinforced neighborhood concerns.

Project leader Martha Heald and landscape architect Randy Collins then described their proposal for slowing traffic on Hope, Tenth and Lorimer Streets, and Rochambeau, Summit and Hillside Avenues by narrowing the streets to force drivers to proceed with more caution. This is accomplished with a combination of "bump outs", median islands and traffic circles.

They also described their preliminary study of a hypothetical scenario in which some of Miriam Hospital's parking on Summit Avenue is displaced to other lots, and replaced by a public park.

Neighbors then had a chance to question and comment on the proposals. Martha and her team will continue work on the plan for several more weeks, incorporating some of the comments they received at the meeting, and afterward.
