State Approves Summit Historic District
Dec 11 - The Summit Avenue Historic District National Register nomination was
approved by the State Review Board today. It now goes to the National
Park Service in Washington, DC for their review.
Friends of Rochambeau Deliver
Nov 12 - To assist Rochambeau Library patrons who have difficulty traveling
to other branches during the library's renovations, the
Friends
of Rochambeau have arranged for a book
delivery service. Read more about it on our

Election Forum Draws a Crowd
Oct 29 - A crowd of nearly one hundred came out to hear the candidates debate
and the ballot questions debated at the SNA's bi-annual
Election Forum.
Candidates for Providence Mayor, State Senate District 1 and
State Rep District 4 joined advocates for and against the 5 ballot
issues in an information-packed 2 hour presentation moderated
by the
League of Women Votors.
October Newsletter Published
Oct 7 - The October
newsletter went to press today, with
articles on SNA's challenge to Miriam Hospital's construction plans,
plans for a strip mall on Hope Street, the closing of the Library,
and more. Also announced is our bi-annual
Election Forum.
SNA Appeals to 783 Hope Developer
Oct 3 - The developer of
783 Hope Street
plans to build a suburban-style strip mall on our quaint,
pedestrian-friendly urban main street. SNA has appealed to
him to reconsider. Concerned citizens stay tuned, we may need
your help.
Summit Avenue Historic District Nominated
Sep 25 - The
Providence Preservation Society
today delivered a
National Register
nomination for the Summit Avenue Historic District to the
Rhode Island
Historic Preservation and Heritage Commission
for review. If approved
the district will become the first to result from the
Summit Neighborhood History Project.
Traffic Committee Selects Fuss & O'Neill
Sep 16 - The Summit Neighborhood Traffic Calming Committee, representing
the City and the SNA, selected
Fuss & O'Neill
to perform Engineering and Design Services for our
traffic calming project.
SNA Challenges Miriam CON
Aug 4 - The Miriam Hospital
has applied to the
Department of Health
for a
Certificate
of Need (CON), which is required of hospitals before
they make major changes to their facilities. The Miriam has proposed to
raze two two-story buildings on their main campus and replace them with a
single building that may eventually rise to over four stories in height.
The SNA has requested a formal hearing on the hospital's request.
Department of Planning Issues RFP
Jun 17 - The Providence Department of Planning and Development issued
a Request for Proposals (RFP) for Engineering and Design Services
for the
Summit Neighborhood
Traffic Calming
project.
Yard Sale Is Best Ever!
May 11 - Our
Eleventh Annual Yard Sale
was our most successful, ever! Thanks to everyone who helped, either
by donating great stuff, volunteering to help, or just stopping by
and spending some money.
Concord Street Gets Cleaned Up
Apr 27 - The SNA led an
April Cleanup at Concord Street
today. Volunteers spent 3 hours removing trash from the area below the
Smithfield overpass. April Cleanups are sponsored by the
City of Providence and
Groundwork Providence.
May Newsletter Published
Apr 16 - The May
newsletter went to press today, with
articles on Miriam Hospital's construction plans,
upcoming neighborhood cleanups, a celebration at the Library,
updates on SNA projects, and an announcement of our eleventh
annual
Yard Sale.
Board Hears Miriam Construction Proposal
Mar 14 - Representatives of
The Miriam Hospital
and its parent corporation,
Lifespan, met with
the SNA Board this evening to describe their plan to modernize their
main campus facilities. Dr. Kathleen Hittner, President of Miriam,
told the board that they plan to tear down the eastern-most two of the
three buildings that front on Seventh Street and erect a single new building
on that location. The two existing buildings are each two stories.
The new building would also have two floors but could be built upward
to four. Board members had many questions for the hospital delegation,
and it was agreed that we would meet again when Miriam's plans become
more firm, in the June timeframe.
Traffic Report Available Online
Feb 11 - The Summit Neighborhood Traffic Calming Study is
now available
on the SNA website. The Study recommends physical improvements to
heavily used (and abused) roadways in Summit that promise to make
our neighborhood safer and more pedestrian-friendly. See the

Annual Meeting Features History Project News
Feb 4 - Fair winter weather encouraged a good turnout as the SNA this evening
held its annual meeting. Featured speakers Mary Kate Harrington of
the Providence Preservation Society and Consultant Kathryn Cavanaugh
discussed their progress defining historic districts within Summit and
preparing to nominate them to the National Register. Russell Krapf of
the Providence Fire Department gave an entertaining talk on fire safety.
Councilman Kevin Jackson, Councilwoman Rita Williams and Senator Rhoda Perry
each spoke briefly and took questions. Community Police Officer
George Pereira took the spotlight for the final segment, answering
questions about crime and policing. See more

January Newsletter Published
Jan 14 - The January
newsletter went to press today, with
articles on the
History Project,
the latest on the DOT's North Main
Street project and an update on the
Traffic Study.
Also, look for an announcement and agenda for the annual meeting.
Annual Meeting Set for February 4th
Jan 9 - The SNA's next annual meeting will be held on Monday, February 4th,
from 7pm to 9pm at Hillside Health Center, 99 Hillside Avenue. The
agenda includes an update on the History Project, fire prevention tips,
Q&A with your local elected officials and also with the police.
Members are reminded to bring $10 dues.
